MODULE SUPPLEMENT: NEUROLOGICAL SYSTEM
Summary

In general, neurologic function is quite well preserved late into life, and it often takes an accumulation of losses before functional changes are evident. However, changes do increase the older person’s vulnerability to specific problems, such as delirium and subdural hematomas. Further, alterations in memory, learning, and sleep can have a significant impact on quality of life. Factors that can mitigate the impact of these changes, such as continued activity and learning, need to be considered. Finally, the impact of changes in neurological functioning are often most evident in changes seen within other systems that are discussed in subsequent modules, for example, as related to changes in muscles. This exemplifies not only the inter-connectedness of all systems but also the diagnostic challenges presented by older adults who present with a given sign or symptom.

Activity: When doing other modules in this series, consider the underlying neurological connections and how alterations in key pathways (afferent, central, efferent) can influence changes that are discussed.
