Storage and Retrieval

Why do we have trouble getting things into long term storage and then retrieving them once they're there?

As we get older, we seem to have less cognitive resources, or reservoirs of mental energy, to use in information processing. Of special importance may be a slowing of our ability to process information; our ability to "think fast". If information coming in is processed too slowly you end up with a traffic jam. New information starts to arrive before the old information is processed and stored. Thus some of the information either doesn't get through or it arrives so late its link with the initial information is weak.

In addition, working memory tends to decline with age (Ashman, et al., 1999; Gabrieli, 1998). That is, our ability to simultaneously process and store information.

Thus in general, processes are slower and learning takes more time.

Discussion Point: Stop and consider these age related changes. What are the implications of these findings for your practice and specialty? How would you need to alter your approach?
